5 Tips To Start A Healthy Lifestyle!

You are ready to start a new healthy lifestyle.

You know the time is now to make a change in your life once and for all.

You have worked on your mind and your feelings to know you need to do whatever it takes to finally reach your healthy state.

But HOW to do it?

There are many things you can do to start this healthy journey. However, I find that when you overwhelm yourself with many restrictions and changes all at once you end up back where you started.

Who wants to go back to square 1, right?

If you are still reading then I know you are ready for real change. I am proud of you and I can’t wait to see your progress.

Remember is about changing your relationship to food, not at all about counting calories or the latest diet.

These are 5 easy things you can start doing this week to achieve a healthy lifestyle:

5Tips_Healthy_Lifestyle_Pin_WebTip # 1. Choose whole foods 80-90% of the time. These foods help to regulate cholesterol levels in the blood and promote a healthier heart. Examples of these whole foods are organic oats, brown rice, quinoa, organic corn,  just to name a few. It’s as important to stay away from processed foods, all packaged and canned food are not your friends in this journey.

Tip # 2. Consume protein dense foods with every meal. A good rule is to use the palm of your hand as a measure for protein intake. A portion size of protein is visually about the size of the palm of your hand. Between 20-30 g if you are a woman (one palm-sized portion) or 40-60 g if you are a man (two palm-sized portions).

Among the many protein sources you can consume, here is a good list to reference:

  • Eggs
  • Chicken breast (boneless and skinless)
  • Turkey breast
  • Seafood/Fish
  • Grass-fed meat in moderation

Vegetarian/Vegan protein:

  • Green Peas
  • Legumes such as lentils
  • Beans
  • Hemp
  • Grains, especially quinoa (highest protein amount)
  • Raw and dry roasted nuts
  • Chickpeas

Tip # 3. Eat vegetables with every meal. Include at least two servings of fruits and/or vegetables with a low glycemic index per meal. Fruits and vegetables have a low calorie density and help with the digestion of food in general. You should avoid fruits at night if you are trying to reach your ideal weight.

Tip # 4. Eat slowly and stop eating when you’re 80% full. This means DO NOT eat until you can no longer zip your pants. To achieve this there are some tips you can do:

  • Finish chewing and swallowing completely before taking another bite of food.
  • Take smaller bites of food.
  • Put your fork down between bites.
  • Use smaller plates.

Tip # 5. Drink warm water with lemon each morning. Starting the day with lemon water is a great way to increase energy and cleanse your system.

  1. Great reminders Carla! I find during the week when I’m on a schedule my eating habits are good. I make my breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then comes the weekend and no routine and I blow it. 🙂 I think that works out to be a 70% success rate. I’d like to shoot for 90%!

    1. Michelle, I totally understand what you are saying (cough, cough)… Hey but 70% is not bad at all. I’d shoot for 80% though. Maybe an idea would be to start the weekend with a green juice? Or being more active than during the week to offset the routine-less weekend ;-p What do you think might help you make a little change here? We all know the answers, we just need a push or reminder sometimes and commit to the change. Even if it’s just a small change! Keep me updated with your progress…
